Environmental Crime in Volvi: Waste Dumping Poisons Lake, Fish Vanish, Water Turns Black

A grave environmental crisis is unfolding in the Volvi region of Greece, as a stream flowing into the protected Lake Volvi has become heavily polluted. Residents and authorities are sounding the alarm over dark, foamy waters and a strong stench emanating from the Agia Paraskevi stream, which originates near Sohos and passes through Prophetis before reaching Scholari.

The ecological damage is stark: local inhabitants report that fish and amphibians like frogs have nearly vanished from the stream. They attribute this devastation to continuous pollution and chemical contamination, expressing outrage and deep concern over the environmental destruction threatening the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The lake itself is a vital Ramsar-protected site, crucial for local fishing activities.

An inspection by the Volvi Municipality's Environment and Quality of Life Directorate confirmed significant wastewater discharge with an extremely unpleasant odor. The municipality has issued a warning that the pollution could contaminate the groundwater and the wider lake ecosystem. Adding to the concern, the Deputy Mayor for Environment, Paschalis Delivasilis, noted the proximity of greenhouses cultivating produce near the stream, suggesting a potential link to agricultural runoff, especially after rainfall, which exacerbates the pollution's flow into the lake.

The municipality has officially raised an alert, demanding a thorough investigation into the origin of the waste and immediate action from regulatory and judicial bodies. The visual evidence of dark, foamy water cascading into Lake Volvi paints a grim picture of an escalating environmental emergency that requires urgent attention to prevent unpredictable consequences.
