EU Prepares Low-Carbon Transport Investment for Indonesia

The European Union is strengthening its commitment to sustainable transportation in Indonesia by increasing investment and partnerships. A key part of this support involves financing the Surabaya Regional Railway Line (SRRL) project, with an initial investment of 236 million euros.

Denis Chaibi, the EU Ambassador to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, emphasized that sustainable transportation is fundamental for economic growth, improved connectivity, and Indonesia's transition to a low-carbon economy. Through the Global Gateway strategy, the EU aims to mobilize quality investments, share European expertise, and build partnerships to deliver modern, resilient, and low-carbon transport infrastructure.

The Indonesia-Europe Roundtable on Sustainable Transport Development, held in Jakarta, brought together government officials, development finance institutions, and the private sector. Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in developing sustainable transport systems, including multimodal transport integration, Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), investment opportunities, and infrastructure financing.

The SRRL project, supported by the KfW Development Bank, is a prime example of this collaboration. The initial 236 million euro financing will support the modernization and electrification of the Surabaya-Sidoarjo commuter line, contributing to a climate-resilient transportation system. Oliver Sperling, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Jakarta, affirmed Germany and Indonesia's long-standing partnership in transport infrastructure, noting that German and European companies are ready to support Indonesia's transport transformation with sustainable technology, expertise, and solutions.
