Girmitiyas remain foundation of Fiji–India ties

The enduring bond between Fiji and India is deeply rooted in the shared history and sacrifice of the Girmitiyas, the indentured laborers who journeyed from India to Fiji. This legacy continues to be the cornerstone of one of the most significant international relationships for both nations, as emphasized by Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta.

Mehta described the Girmitiya legacy as carrying "profound meaning" for India, identifying these laborers as the true foundation of Fiji-India ties. While Girmitiyas were taken to 19 countries, Fiji holds a unique position due to the immense scale of their contribution and the subsequent deep cultural integration. The High Commissioner lauded the Fijian Government's decision to observe May 14 as Girmit Day, a national public holiday, recognizing it as a vital acknowledgment of history and the sacrifices made.

This year's Girmit Day commemoration, held virtually at the Fiji Museum, was attended by Prime Minister and the Minister of Migration Affairs, further highlighting its national importance. India remains committed to preserving Girmit history globally and fostering connections with descendants through diaspora engagement. Fiji, with its substantial Indo-Fijian community, remains a crucial link in these efforts.
