Indonesia Issues National Action Plan to Counter Violent Extremism Under President Prabowo

Under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia has taken a decisive step to bolster national security with the issuance of Presidential Regulation No. 8 of 2026. This regulation establishes the National Action Plan for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (RAN PE) for the crucial period of 2026-2029, demonstrating a clear commitment to safeguarding our nation from the scourge of terrorism and extremism.

As articulated by the Head of the National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT), Eddy Hartono, this Presidential Regulation is a direct fulfillment of the legal mandate set forth in Law No. 5 of 2018 concerning the Eradication of Terrorism. The law obligates the government to proactively engage in prevention, encompassing national preparedness, counter-radicalization, and deradicalization strategies. This is not a new endeavor; it builds upon previous efforts, with a similar regulation issued in 2021, signifying a sustained and evolving approach to this persistent threat.

What makes this iteration particularly significant is its deep integration into the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2025-2029, positioning counter-terrorism as a national priority. The plan emphasizes strengthening synergy between defense and security sectors and actively involves regional governments in formulating localized action plans. Furthermore, the BNPT is keen on fostering greater public engagement, encouraging community participation through education, literacy campaigns, and active advocacy against the dangers of terrorism. This comprehensive, multi-stakeholder approach, encompassing nine key themes from community resilience to international cooperation, underscores Indonesia's unwavering resolve to maintain peace and security for all its citizens.
