Indonesia Probes 5,355 Food Service Units for Suspected Violations

Indonesia's National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is cracking down on food service units (SPPG) suspected of serious violations. Head of BGN, Sudaryono, revealed that an audit by the Attorney General's Office examined 16,482 SPPGs, uncovering 5,355 units with alleged violations categorized as severe, moderate, and mild.

Earlier this week, BGN suspended 833 problematic SPPG kitchens across Indonesia. These closures included 98 in Sumatra, 424 in Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, and Papua, and 311 in Java and Madura. Sudaryono explained these suspended kitchens would not be paid due to Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) breaches, including unhygienic food, food poisoning cases, substandard food quality, and inadequate wastewater treatment.

Beyond kitchen suspensions, BGN also terminated 261 non-civil servant employees and imposed disciplinary actions on 9 civil servants for severe violations and 39 for minor offenses. Sudaryono emphasized the new policy: suspended kitchens will not receive payment, a departure from previous practices where payments continued despite suspensions.

The kitchens that are suspended are not like before. Before they were suspended, but still paid. If now they are closed, they are not paid, because of violations.
