KMI and Jongno-gu Launch Visiting Health Program for Vulnerable Elderly

In an era of rapid aging, the Dong-A Ilbo highlights innovative approaches to elder care, focusing on proactive, community-based solutions. The recent "Health Care" initiative, a collaboration between KMI Korea Medical Research Institute and the Jongno-gu Health Center, exemplifies this shift from hospital-centric treatment to a more accessible, "visiting health management" model.

This program, which saw KMI employees visit 18 households identified as having vulnerable elderly residents, goes beyond simple welfare checks. It involves direct health assessments, provision of essential living supplies like medication calendars and moisturizers, and crucial connections to broader public health and welfare services. The involvement of health center officials and local health workers ensures a coordinated, integrated approach to tackling the "care blind spots" within the community.

This activity was prepared to directly check on the well-being of the vulnerable and provide emotional support. Through cooperation with the health center, local care institutions, and community health workers, we will continue public-private cooperative activities that strengthen the linkage of health and welfare services.

KMI's commitment, as stated by Chairwoman Kim Soon-i, is to provide emotional support and strengthen the linkage between health and welfare services through public-private partnerships. The institute is exploring the potential expansion and regularisation of this program, recognizing its significance in an aging society where medical accessibility remains a challenge for many.

This initiative is particularly noteworthy from a local perspective. While international coverage might focus on technological advancements in healthcare, the Dong-A Ilbo emphasizes the enduring importance of human connection and community-level support. The "visiting health management" model, as implemented here, directly addresses the needs of those who cannot easily reach medical facilities, reflecting a deep understanding of the local social fabric and the specific challenges faced by the elderly in South Korea.
