KPK probes more individuals in Customs bribery case

Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is actively investigating multiple parties suspected of involvement in bribery within the Directorate General of Customs and Excise. This probe is an expansion of existing investigations, signaled by the issuance of new general investigation orders.

Achmad Taufik Husein, the acting Director of Investigations at KPK, stated that the investigation is proceeding after analyzing findings from previous trials and investigations. "This means we will name suspects after sufficient evidence is gathered during the investigation process," Taufik explained. He indicated that two main bribery clusters have been identified within the Directorate General.

The first cluster involves approximately Rp 91 billion in bribes allegedly paid by the importing company PT Blueray Cargo to various customs officials. The second cluster pertains to bribery incidents that occurred outside the direct purview of the Directorate General. KPK has already designated a new suspect in connection with the ongoing investigation, though the identity remains undisclosed.

Six suspects are already undergoing trial for bribery related to customs import duties. Four recipients of bribes, including former directors and heads of sections within the Directorate General, have faced trial. The bribe payers, including the owner of PT Blueray Cargo and other company officials, have already received prison sentences and fines from the Jakarta Corruption Court. John Field, owner of PT Blueray Cargo, was sentenced to two years in prison and fined Rp 300 million. Dedy Kurniawan and Andri received one year and six months imprisonment each, along with fines.
