Major expansion at Katowice Airport: Strategic infrastructure to be built this year

Katowice Airport is embarking on a significant expansion, with a key focus this year on completing a new multimodal hub designed for the transshipment of goods and fuel, complete with essential railway infrastructure. Artur Tomasik, president of Górnośląskie Towarzystwo Lotnicze (GTL), highlighted during the European Economic Congress in Katowice that this strategic investment, valued at over 170 million PLN, is slated for completion by October. This development is particularly crucial for bolstering fuel security, a point underscored by the current geopolitical climate in the Middle East. The hub, with a storage capacity of 4,000 cubic meters, will enable the airport to meet regulatory requirements for fuel reserves, thereby guaranteeing the continuity of aircraft refueling operations. This expansion is not just about fuel; Katowice Airport is also strengthening its position in the aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) sector, evidenced by the recent opening of a new technical hangar capable of accommodating two Airbus A321-sized aircraft. Furthermore, the airport is making strides in its cargo operations, having signed an agreement with DHL for a new, build-to-suit cargo terminal, expected to be operational by early 2029. These developments signal Katowice Airport's ambition to solidify its standing as a vital logistics and aviation hub in Poland and Central Europe.

In this year, we are implementing investments worth over PLN 170 million. The main investment is a multimodal hub for the transshipment of goods and fuel based on a railway siding. We will commission it in October this year. This is important, strategic infrastructure.
