Nigeria Democratic Congress Begins Nationwide Congresses Ahead of National Convention

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is embarking on a significant internal organizational drive with its first nationwide congresses, culminating in its inaugural National Convention on May 9, 2026, in Abuja. This process marks a crucial phase for the relatively new party as it solidifies its democratic structures and leadership ahead of future political contests.

The party's Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, outlined the schedule, which begins with ward and polling unit congresses on May 1-2, followed by local government congresses on May 4. The culmination in Abuja is expected to see the finalization of critical party decisions and the establishment of its core leadership.

The NDC leadership has expressed confidence in its officials to conduct these congresses according to established guidelines. The involvement of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies underscores the party's commitment to transparency and order, as mandated by electoral laws. On the back of the ongoing congresses, the NDC is also set for its maiden national party convention, which is scheduled to hold in Abuja on the 9th of May, 2026. Preparations for the convention have been concluded by the planning committee. All is now set for the big event, which shall host accredited party faithfuls as well as the relevant INEC officials who are expected to monitor and observe the conduct of the Convention as mandated by the Electoral Act. Security agencies have also been put on notice to ensure adequate security and safety for accredited party faithfuls, officials and other guests.
