Sokoto Labour Unions Endorse Governor Aliyu for Second Term

In Sokoto State, the organized labour movement, represented by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), has thrown its weight behind Governor Ahmed Aliyu's bid for a second term in 2027. This significant endorsement, announced during the International Workers’ Day celebration, underscores the governor's perceived commitment to worker welfare.

You have done nothing wrong to us, and you have been tremendously assisting us in many ways. Therefore, nothing warrants us to ask for a change of government in 2027.

The state chairmen of both unions lauded the administration's policies, particularly the implementation of the N70,000 national minimum wage and the consistent payment of salaries and pensions. These actions, they argued, have created an environment where a change in leadership is unwarranted. The presentation of an Award of Excellence to the governor, a first for any governor from the NLC/TUC in Sokoto, highlights the depth of their support and appreciation.

This is the first time in the history of NLC/TUC in the state to bestow such an award on any governor.

Governor Aliyu, represented by his deputy, Idris Muhammad Gobir, expressed gratitude and pledged to continue prioritizing workers' welfare. The Head of Service also urged workers to respond with dedication. This development occurs amidst heightened political activity leading up to the 2027 general elections, positioning the governor favorably with a key stakeholder group. From a local perspective, this endorsement is a crucial signal of support, demonstrating the governor's success in engaging with labor unions, a vital constituency in Nigerian politics.
