PDP: After S-Court blow, leaders fix emergency NEC meeting

The Supreme Court's recent judgment has sent shockwaves through the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effectively dismantling its National Working Committee (NWC) and necessitating an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. This ruling, which annulled the 2025 National Convention that produced the current NWC, plunges Nigeria's main opposition party into a period of significant uncertainty and internal restructuring.

Following the judgment of the Supreme Court on Thursday, April 30, 2026, which stripped our party of a National Working Committee, the Board immediately assumed administrative leadership of the party in line with the empowering provisions of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).

The Board of Trustees (BoT), under the leadership of Senator Adolphus Wabara, has stepped in to provide interim administrative leadership, a move designed to avert a complete leadership vacuum. Wabara's statement underscores the urgency of the situation, emphasizing the BoT's constitutional mandate to manage the party's affairs in such unprecedented circumstances. The party is now tasked with navigating these turbulent waters to restore stability and prepare for the 2027 general elections.

This crisis is rooted in deep-seated internal disputes that escalated prior to the 2025 convention. The legal challenge, initiated by 'mischief-makers' in collusion with suspended party officials, aimed to disrupt the convention and has now culminated in this significant judicial setback. The PDP's ability to overcome these internal divisions and reassert its leadership will be critical in its quest to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming elections. On October 4, 2025, precisely 42 days before our scheduled convention, some mischief-makers, in collusion with the suspended former National Secretary, National Legal Adviser and National Organising Secretary, and apparently working in cahoots with enemies of the PDP, secretly instituted a case against our party to stop the holding of the convention.
