Penang, Malaysia – In a move to safeguard its prized 'King of Fruits,' the Penang Fruit Farmers Association has launched an innovative QR code system to verify the authenticity of locally grown durians. This proactive measure, as reported by Utusan Malaysia, is designed to combat the influx of counterfeit durians and assure consumers that they are purchasing genuine Penang produce.

Through this system, consumers can view the durian's identification code, its original farm location, farm information, and the official license number of the farm that produced the durian.

The initiative, championed by state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee Chairman Wong Hon Wai, allows consumers to simply scan a QR code affixed to each durian. This scan provides comprehensive details, including the durian's identification code, orchard location, farm information, and the official license number of the producing farm. This level of transparency is unprecedented and aims to bolster consumer trust in Penang's premium durians, renowned for their rich aroma and creamy texture.

This system is particularly crucial given Penang's international reputation for high-quality durians. By implementing this verification, the state is not only protecting its brand but also enhancing the value proposition for its farmers. The QR codes are valid for seven days to prevent misuse and duplication, ensuring that each code is linked to a specific, recently harvested fruit. This attention to detail reflects a serious commitment to maintaining the integrity of the Penang durian market.

This QR code system is expected to add significant value to the industry, making Penang a benchmark for quality control and traceability in the global durian trade.
