Pope Leo XIV marked his first year as pontiff with a message of peace, though some faithful observe a noticeable difference in his style compared to his beloved predecessor, Francis. Addressing thousands in Pompeii, including many infirm and disabled individuals, Leo XIV spoke of blessings and peace. Yet, for some, like Salvatore Sica, 68, the new Pope feels more remote. "He is not like Francis, who felt like a brother or father belonging to the family," Sica commented, adding, "He preaches peace, but he seems distant from the people." Despite this, Sica acknowledged, "He is a good Pope." This reserved approach marks a distinct contrast to Francis's known spontaneity. The pontiff's recent meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken underscored shared interests, particularly following recent diplomatic strains. Tensions had flared between the Vatican and US President Donald Trump over the Iran conflict and the US approach to migration, which Leo XIV had termed "very disrespectful." Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni publicly thanked the Pope for his "tireless message of faith, hope, and peace," calling his voice a "global compass" in these uncertain times.
