Powerful summer storm leaves parts of Latvia without power

Latvia was hit by its most powerful summer storm in nearly six decades on the night of August 23rd, causing significant disruption and damage. The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre reported that the storm's wind gusts were the strongest recorded for a summer storm since 1966.

The severe weather led to widespread power outages and communication failures in numerous locations across the country. For many residents, these essential services were interrupted for extended periods. Even two days after the storm passed, some areas were still struggling with the aftermath, facing ongoing disruptions.

Visual evidence of the storm's intensity was apparent in Riga, where the author observed numerous large trees overturned or broken in the Teika district and the city center. The damage serves as a stark reminder of the storm's ferocity and the challenges faced by communities in its wake as they work to restore normalcy.
