"Road of Death" to be unrecognizable after receiving permit

A vital regional road linking the centers of Kaunas and Alytus in Lithuania, notorious as the "Road of Death," is set to undergo a significant transformation into a modern four-lane highway. The section of the Kaunas–Prienai–Alytus road, spanning from kilometer 19.48 to 31.10, experiences heavy traffic, with over 10,000 vehicles, including approximately 800 heavy-duty trucks, using it daily as of 2025.

"Drivers on the Kaunas–Prienai road have long seen that its quality did not match its importance and load. It was one of the most problematic stretches, so changes were necessary. A four-lane highway will fundamentally change driving safety and convenience between Kaunas, Prienai, and Alytus in just two years. We continue to care not only for the main transport arteries of the country but also for other roads," stated Minister of Transport Juras Taminskas.

The project involves reconstructing nearly 12 kilometers of road in the Prienai municipality, expanding it to a four-lane (2+2) highway. Plans include three tunnel underpasses, three overpasses, a pedestrian overpass, a bridge over the Šventupė river, two animal crossings, five roundabouts, retaining walls, and noise barriers. Upon completion, the project is expected to enhance traffic safety, increase transport capacity, and improve connectivity between Garliava and Prienai, thereby reducing accident risks and improving the quality of life for residents near the road.

Following successful public procurement and the signing of a construction contract, work is slated to commence this autumn. The project's completion is planned for the end of 2028.
