Vilnius to Reroute Traffic on Maironio Street for Utility Upgrades

Vilnius is implementing significant traffic changes on Maironio Street, a key thoroughfare in the historic Old Town, starting July 27. The adjustments are part of a multi-phase project to modernize century-old water and sewage systems, a crucial step to prevent recurring accidents and ensure uninterrupted water supply.

Viktoras Matonis, "Vilniaus vandenų" Production Department Director, highlighted the project's importance, stating, "By reconstructing century-old water pipes, we will avoid recurring accidents and sinkholes in the future, thus eliminating the need to close traffic on these streets and ensuring continuous water supply." He added that the modernized infrastructure will better serve the growing city's needs and mitigate risks, maintaining high service quality.

The street will become one-way between B. Radvilaitės and Rusų streets, with temporary parking restrictions. The intersection of Maironio and Aukštaičių streets will be closed to traffic, rerouting vehicles via Kūdrų Street. Sections of Maironio Street will also be narrowed due to ongoing work. A parking lot between O. Šimaitės and Maironio streets will be temporarily closed, with affected residents offered alternative parking solutions.

Public transport routes, including buses 10, 11, 33, and 89, will continue to operate on detours. The project ensures safe movement for people with disabilities and parents with strollers throughout its duration, maintaining access to residential buildings and businesses. The modernization, designed by the Vilnius Development Company, aims to create a more convenient and safer Old Town area, better suited for modern urban needs while preserving its historical uniqueness.
