Sultan of Selangor Rejects Pig Farming, Cites Environmental and Economic Concerns

His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has once again firmly stated his disapproval of pig farming within the state. In a recent decree, the Sultan emphasized that even with modern technology, the economic viability of such farms is questionable given the state's specific needs and resource constraints. This stance, consistent with his previous pronouncements, underscores a pragmatic approach to land use and economic development in Selangor.

His Highness suggested that pork be imported from other states like Sarawak to meet the needs of the non-Muslim community that consumes pork in Selangor. Even countries like Singapore do not raise pigs, but instead import from abroad.

The Sultan proposed a practical alternative: importing pork from regions like Sarawak or even from Singapore, which itself does not engage in domestic pig farming. This suggestion aims to cater to the non-Muslim community's dietary requirements without compromising the state's land resources or environmental integrity. His Royal Highness pointed out that Selangor's limited land and high property values are better suited for more economically beneficial and broadly advantageous developments.

He highlighted the potential for pollution of soil, air, and crucially, river water sources due to waste and sewage discharge. The proximity of these farms to water catchment areas, which supply clean water to approximately 9 million residents across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya, adds a layer of urgency to these concerns. Maintaining the purity of these water sources is paramount for public health and well-being.
