Tinubu asks ECOWAS to present united voice against Afro-phobic attacks

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to present a united front against Afro-phobic attacks, particularly those targeting Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 69th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government in Sierra Leone, Tinubu strongly condemned the recent incidents.

As already stated by His Excellency, the President of Ghana, ECOWAS should present a united voice in this condemnation.

Tinubu emphasized that ECOWAS should formally address the issue at the next African Union session, sending a clear message that such intolerance is unacceptable. He reminded South Africa of the sacrifices made by African nations, including Nigeria, for their liberation. The Nigerian government has already facilitated the evacuation of over 1,490 citizens from South Africa in seven batches.

ECOWAS should table the matter before the next session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.

Beyond condemning the attacks, Tinubu highlighted Nigeria's commitment to principled leadership within ECOWAS. He stressed the importance of constitutional governance, the rule of law, and respect for human rights. According to Tinubu, the most effective way to prevent unconstitutional changes of government and disruptive protests is by ensuring good governance that delivers tangible benefits to citizens, while also respecting constitutional term limits.

This would send a clear message that this type of intolerance is totally unacceptable under any guise.

Furthermore, Nigeria is committed to strengthening regional security through the establishment of a Counter Terrorism Force and enhancing the ECOWAS Standby Force. This initiative aims to improve counter-terrorism cooperation, intelligence sharing, joint operations, and preventive diplomacy to ensure peace and stability in the West African region. Tinubu also commended Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio for his leadership during a period of political transitions, security challenges, economic pressures, and humanitarian concerns.

I am glad to add that beyond adventurism, the most effective tool against unconstitutional changes of government and mass protests that is capable of undermining good order is for us to enthrone good governance that delivers more tangible benefits to our citizens.
