Typhoon Dolphin Hits China, Over 1 Million Evacuated

Typhoon Dolphin, China's most powerful tropical cyclone this year, has made landfall on the country's eastern coast, bringing torrential rain and fierce winds. The storm struck near Yuhuan in Zhejiang Province on Sunday evening, with maximum wind speeds of 151 kilometers per hour near its center, equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane.

Authorities have taken extensive measures, including evacuating offshore workers and ordering ships back to port. Inspections are underway at reservoirs, mountain streams, landslide-prone areas, construction sites, and tourist attractions. Heavy rainfall is forecast to continue until August 10 across several provinces, including Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Fujian, with some areas in Zhejiang expected to receive up to 500 millimeters of rain.

A tourist from Guangdong described typhoons as a normal part of life in southern China's coastal regions, noting this storm did not appear exceptionally strong by their standards. In Zhejiang's Wenzhou city, over 900,000 residents were evacuated, and more than 1,000 emergency shelters were opened. The typhoon is expected to move westward and gradually weaken, but the risk of floods and landslides remains high, particularly in mountainous terrain.
