Tragedy has struck North Halmahera, Indonesia, as the Dukono volcano erupted violently, claiming the lives of two foreign tourists and a local resident. The eruption, which occurred early morning local time, spewed a massive 10-kilometer high column of ash and smoke, raising grave concerns for the ten foreign nationals still missing.

This incident is particularly alarming as the region had been officially closed to tourism since April 17 due to heightened volcanic activity. Mount Dukono was already under a level three alert, the second-highest on Indonesia's four-tier scale, with warnings issued for visitors to maintain a distance of at least four kilometers from the Malupang Warirang crater. The fact that fatalities and disappearances occurred despite these measures highlights the unpredictable and dangerous nature of volcanic activity.

Dukono volcano, located on Halmahera Island, is known for its persistent activity, having continuously emitted ash and sulfur dioxide clouds since 1933.
