Democratic Party Strategically Nominates Lawyer Kim Young-bin for Gongju, Buyeo, Cheongyang By-election

The Democratic Party has finalized its candidate nominations for the upcoming by-elections by strategically selecting lawyer Kim Young-bin for the Gongju, Buyeo, and Cheongyang constituency. Kim, who was formally introduced as the party's '4th recruited talent,' is presented as a candidate with strong local ties, having been born and raised in Gongju. Her background as a prosecutor is emphasized, with party leader Rep. Jung Cheong-rae highlighting her dedication to rectifying societal injustices and upholding justice during her decade-long legal career.

Lawyer Kim was born in Gongju and completed elementary, middle, and high school all in Gongju, making her a Gongju person to the bone, a Chungcheong person.

Rep. Jung further elaborated on Kim's contributions, particularly her role as a policy aide to the Minister of Justice from 2019 to 2021. In this capacity, she was instrumental in formulating and enacting prosecutorial reforms focused on human rights protection and organizational restructuring. Her efforts in expanding the authority of prosecutorial citizens' committees and enhancing judicial transparency and democracy through citizen participation were specifically lauded.

Kim Young-bin herself expressed a deep connection to the Chungnam region, stating, "My roots are in Chungnam, from elementary school through high school." She also emphasized the strength of her potential alliance with Park Soo-hyun, the Democratic Party's candidate for governor of Chungnam Province, as crucial for local development. She further detailed her practical experience in solidifying the foundations of democratic judicial control, including the rational adjustment of investigative powers and comprehensive reforms for human rights protection within the prosecution service.

With Kim's nomination, the Democratic Party has now filled all 14 seats for the National Assembly by-elections. The party is gearing up for the upcoming elections by preparing to launch its Central Election Committee, themed 'Normalization of the Republic of Korea,' on May 10th. Rep. Jung Cheong-rae is slated to serve as the standing committee chairman, with plans to recruit an external figure for a co-chair position, signaling a broad-based campaign strategy.
